If you are brand new to blogging and non-tech saavy, then this article is for you. This article discusses how to create your first blog as well as how to monetize your blog.
First of all, what is a blog? Blog is the shortened internet term for Web Log. Basically, it is a journal that one can publish online.
Why do people blog? The internet is an interesting phenomenon. It allows someone to enter the public forum, while maintaining a sense of privacy. This holds an attraction for many people who want to write about their lives, frustrations, interests and hobbies. It gives people a voice in the public realm. A simple search will turn up numerous blogs on all kinds of subjects. Beyond that, you can monetize your blog and start earning money with your new hobby.
So, how does one start a blog? There are several popular free blogging platforms. The two most popular are Blogspot.com and WordPress.com.
For the purposes of this article, I will describe the process on Blogspot, but the principles are the same on most other platforms.
Blogspot, is run by Google. If you have a gmail account, you can simple use your gmail account to sign onto Blogspot.com. Otherwise, you can create a new account.
Once you sign onto Blogspot, you can update a profile about yourself if you chose. Then, simply click on the link that says “create a blog.” This will take you to a page where you give your blog a name and web address. After you do that, just continue on.
Your page can now be reached by the public by going to your web address you put in earlier. It’s as simple as that!
Of your you’ll need to start adding content. You can do that by hitting the “new post” link at the upper right. Also, you can play around with the design of your blog by following the “design” link. Have fun!
Now go start your blog!
If you are interested in how to monetize your blog, please read on.
There are several popular methods for monetizing your blog. I will discuss a few of the more popular methods for monetizing your blog here.
First, if you have a product to sell, you can write about and promote your own product or sell a product for someone else. Provide links to where potential customers can purchase your product. If your content is compelling, this is one way to boost sales in the product. Selling a product is a direct and effective way to monetize your blog.
The second way is to sell advertising space to others. You basically provide links and promote other people’s products. If you are simply selling ad space on your blog to others, you can generate some passive income. However, you need to generate a large amount of traffic and provide quality content to continue enticing buyers.
One other method of monetizing your blog as I discussed earlier is simply selling the products of another. This is known as affiliate marketing. Using this method of monetizing your blog, you don’t need to create your own product, you simply link to another person’s product from your blog. You will earn a commission if someone makes a purchase through your link, or you can simply post ads and earn money whenever someone clicks or views the ads.
Each of these methods of monetizing your blog has its pros and cons. You’ll need to try out each method to see which one fits best with your style.
The easiest way to start monetizing your blog if you are completely new to blogging is to start with Google adsense. Adsense is Google’s ad network. You can sign up and get directions on how to copy and paste their ad code into your site. Their program will scan your page and rotate appropriate ads based on your content. You can basically set it and leave it. Adsense pays you whenever someone clicks on the ad on your page. The payout per click can be anything for pennies to dollars depending on your content. It’s simple to get set up and easy to use. However, use this as a learning experience. You generally need to have a good amount of traffic to start seeing high returns with programs such as adsense.
Be patient and learn from the experience. As you get comfortable with how adsense works, you can look for other ways to monetize your blog.
Good luck and have fun blogging!
While this article uses Blogger primarily as a simple example. I would suggest using them only to practice, however if you want to enter the business of creating a serious blog, I do not recommend using Blogger.
You will find that the Blogger spambot is overly aggressive. It auto flags blogs that drive traffic and does frequent updating. As such, while it does catch spam, it also will mistakenly flag legitimate monetized blogs and delete them. Furthermore, their methods are such that the more time and effort you put into your blog, the more likely it is to be flagged. While I like the ease of use, I can’t recommend them until this issue is resolved.
I do recommend either going with your own host or using a wordpress blog.
This blog uses hostgator for hosting. I highly recommend their services if you decide to self host. They aren’t the cheapest (relatively speaking, you can still sign up for less than $5 a month) , but they are reliable and fast.
