If you’re running a make money blog or a blogging about blogging blog and you find yourself writing all about making money, then you’re trying too hard.
Did you know that making money with your blog isn’t just about making money?
Just think back on some of your favorite posts by your favorite bloggers. I’ll bet many of them don’t have anything to do with making money.
I find the best posts are those that either share a philosophy or teach something of value. The best posts are the ones that give away great free value without requiring anything in return.
Here’s a few examples of posts from awesome making money blogs (or blogging blogs) that have absolutely nothing to do with making money:
- My Insanity Results from Smart Passive Income
- Finding Balance-Saving Time from Blogging Without a Blog
- How I Became an Extreme Minimalist Without Even Realizing It from Blogging Bookshelf
Go ahead, read through those posts.
Do you notice an interesting trend? They have absolutely nothing to do with making money.
Each post focuses on making some kind of lifestyle improvement or change. The ideas in each post can be implemented not only on a blog, but in our overall lives if we chose.
Yet, if you follow these bloggers and the bloggers, each of them is finding success online.
Which begs the question…
Do All Your Posts Need to Be About Making Money?
We are often told that “content is king” and we need to continue filling our blogs with content in order to get traffic. The ultimate goal is to turn your blog profitable.
Does that train of thought sound familiar?
So, typically, if one were to follow that advice, they may begin by picking a niche.
So, right off the bat, you are looking for some product to sell to somebody. Then you read up and learn about the product.
Whew! Are you getting tired yet?
Probably not. You’re still carried on by the excitement of the possibility of making money online.
Then you launch your website.
- You start blogging about your niche, mostly talking about different ways of making money.
- You mention your product.
- You write pillar articles. Tutorials all about your chosen topic.
- But as time goes by, you find that you can only talk about making money so many different ways.
- After a month, you are starting to scour the internet for ideas.
- You’re trying out new products to pitch.
- Another month goes by. You start to adjust your posting frequency.
- You write a post about adjusting your posting frequency.
- You hit blogger’s block.
- You write a post about getting past blogger’s block.
Whew this is getting tiring…
Does this pattern sound familiar?
The problem is you’re trying too hard.
Not all of your posts need to be about making money.
Making money is such a small part of being successful in life as a whole, why should it be the only focus of your blog?
Express Yourself
Blogging should be about expressing yourself.
Why limit yourself to simply talking about money?
Yes, yes. You’re trying to run a make money blog. But making money is such a small part of being successful in life. Why should it be such a large part of your blog?
Isn’t your blog really about finding a way to be successful online? It’s kind of looking at a slice of your life.
It’s so much easier to express yourself when you are talking things other than money. Think about any conversation that you’ve had with your friends. How much of it is about money? Even when you talk about life, the universe and everything.
You can spend all night passing time talking about life and never cross the subject of money. Yet, when you think back, those nights probably end up being your fondest memories.
Blogging is the same way.
But What About Focus?
Everyone talks about focus. Even I talk about having focus in some of my articles here. But focus is a funny thing.
You want to have a focus on your goals, but keep your vision broad.
It’s okay to open up your blog’s topic of discussion every once in a while. In fact, I think even when you have a make money blog, any topic that talks about success in life or improving your lifestyle can draw your audience.
If fact, your real goal should be about documenting and sharing your unique path to success.
There are a million ways to find success in your blog and your life. You need to share your unique path. You can only do that when you shift your focus off the narrow topics and broaden your horizons.
Focus on sharing yourself and your philosophies. You’ll find a wealth of information by looking within. You’ll find that when you broaden your topics, you can still maintain your focus and blogging will come so much easier.
Ultimately, your blog is about sharing yourself and your thoughts.
And you are so much more than just about money.
I have to admit having a blog could be able to generate money. At first, I blog to be able to know and learn about blogging. Then second, earning money doesn't hurt. But I have to learn to love blogging because it defines my interest. I have to agree that unique content is definitely the key to blogging and the rest will also follow if the bloggers pay attention to it.
yes, exactly! It's so much easier to blog when you are just enjoying creating new and unique content. The money side of it will follow. As long as you are enjoying it, it will be worth it.
There are many topics aside from making money online that people find interesting and important. Great examples about blogs that have topics not related to making money online Richard. There are so many interesting stuffs to learn aside from creating a traffic to ones site, social media, guest blogging etc. It is about time we focus on creating blogs that talks more about life, stuff with love to do, and topics that will make people smile.
My recent post How To Pick Up A Girl
I really enjoy opening up and talking about more than just making money. Blogging can be about life, the universe and everything. Which can really make a blog an enjoyable read.
I used to have a blog for money.lol I never able to continue it though because I knew nothing about blogging for money. 😀
haha, so true. It's the story of so many blogs. I started that way too, but this blog keeps going because I really enjoy learning about the subject and sharing the things I learn.
I think you are correct—-often times if you focus on the money, you lose sight of the real ideas, goals and values. It can be a circle, though, eventually, your focus will always bring you back to money as that is how we operate in the world. Just being you really is the base for many things, then.
I agree, I really think that if you write about what you enjoy, then your focus on the things you love will bring money back to you.
It does make sense. I think it's nice to have an occasional post about making money on blog like sharing you monthly revenue and how you hit the jackpot. I bet one can have a problem with consistency on topics when you only cover making money on blog topic. Variety is a good option. Honestly, I think personal development blogs has a lot of audience and those kind of blogs are money machine.
I enjoy writing more about different topics and if you're creative you can still tie in different ideas to your blogs overall main theme. I think it's easier when you open up the topics a little more and write about things you enjoy.
Hi, Richard,
I could not agree more on this-in addition,if everyone writes about money, how interesting it can be for the blog visitors to read about money making methods all of the time, day by day? Blogging is about expressing, whether in short form, or not, the relevant thing is that it engages the visitor to stay and visit again. My favorite blog posts are those that are written in funny way, from a unique approach or from personal experience. And not all of that has to be money related (I even prefer when it's not at all).
My recent post Clipart Coupon Code
That's true as well. The readers must get bored if they read the same thing on blogs all the time. The important thing for the blogger is to add their own personal style to their blog and make it unique. I also like blogs that include some personal stories and humor. Even the money related blogs are better reads when they add that personal touch.
I'm with you. It seems that's the first thing newbies want to do is start a money making blog. It's as predicable as the weather.
