5 Cheap Cities Where It’s Great to be a Freelance Writer

Published on October 25, 2018 by ConnieB

Being a freelancer is not an easy or cushy job and the main key to a successful freelance writing career is choosing the right city to live in.

Cities and neighborhoods define what will be the quality of your life and how much money you’ll be able to earn, save and invest in something. Basically, when it comes to freelance jobs, the only thing you really need is a good place you can call home and a working room where you can separate your thoughts from the fun time and work. The whole process of getting tasks and submitting results will be supported by your contractor. For example, human resources managers in Rentberry insist that implementing new HR technologies to manage freelancers yield great results. The blockchain ledger makes the whole process more transparent and smart-contracts can ensure that they only pay for a finished job.

Have do you usually interact with your freelance customers? We hope that more and more companies will follow new trends and implement technologies in the process of managing freelancers.

No matter how good your process is thought-out, writers and other creative people usually may stumble upon such thing as a creative block and that’s a tricky bastard that many of you do not know how to approach. Our today’s article will help you choose the right city where you can be a freelance writer, get inspiration for your works, live a truly pleasant life and even save money to buy your own home, travel or invest in some business.

We compile a list of the best cities that can offer you a great cost of living statistics and good technology and business environment. Of course, we could’ve just written down New York, LA, and other big sharks, but let’s be honest, the rent prices there are crazy. Working there as a freelancer is all about giving half of your income to your landlord. So our today’s list will include the cities where you’ll be able to rent a decent place for a reasonable or sometimes even surprisingly low amount of money. Let’s cut to the chase and see our first location!

Austin, Texas

This city is on some epic spree; you can notice Austin in dozens of articles in media talking about this new startup heaven. The city itself offers a very good environment for anyone who works with technology companies. Since freelancing is not always only about Upwork tasks, you can pitch local startups and tech companies and work with them remotely. It means that in Austin you not only will feel good about the cost of living, you’ll also be able to apply for a good job and get the best article requests from newly-built startups!

As a writer, you will be interested in visiting a Harry Ransom Center, that’s where you’ll be able to see an enormous collection of manuscripts and letters. Reasonable median rent price, great coffee shops, and indie-bookstores. This is an excellent and solid ground for a writer, give it a shot!

Durham, North Carolina

The affordability of this city is fantastic, but while we talk about the cost of living and prices for new houses, the rent is not so low – $1300 for an average apartment. Same as the Austin area, Durham is well-known for lots of businesses and great freelancing community.

Durham offers you to be a part of the Triangle Association of Freelancers. As a writing freelancer, you’ll be able to get any help there, isn’t it a great way to start your life in Durham? Meet someone who’s just like you and discuss your writing projects to inspire each other and give birth to new ideas.

Since the city has startup incubators and great tech companies, numerous people from New York and other big cities consider moving here to live their lives as freelancers.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Yes, we all know that Philadelphia is close to New York, but when it comes to the life affordability, you’ll be amazed how much cheaper Phili is! The greatest thing about smaller cities is a great chance to meet small local freelancing communities where people are always ready to help each other.

Philadelphia has a very good community of freelancers and some of them moved there from big cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. The city itself is not very friendly to small businesses, but it doesn’t hurt the local freelance market in any way. Finding writing opportunities here is not hard.

The only problem here that you may have is a high wage tax. This is not a good thing for freelancers, but considering how cheap the life here is, you may try to live with this wage tax and be happy anyway.

Scottsdale, Arizona

This one entered our list being well-known for a huge number of self-employed residents. The freelancing community here is friendly and create a healthy environment for anyone who wants to enter the writing industry. People in this community may help you get a few leads, get integrated into the large network of writers and collaborate with someone cool.

As a writer, you’ll feel great here. The attractions and amenities can help you take a break from your writing tasks, charge your batteries once again and get back to business. Inspiration is always in the air of Scottsdale. While you can get inspired any day in this city, you can also get stuck in traffic, since the city itself is pretty populated, so the commute is not so convenient as it could be.

Work remotely and forget about this problem at all. Also, make sure you check out the rent prices that are more affordable than many of the modern cities with the same amenities and properties listed on the market.

Akron, Ohio

Take the national average rent prices and cost of living and compare these numbers to the Akron statistics. You’ll be surprised how affordable this place is. However, we’re not here just for affordable housing; we also need a city that will boost your freelancing career and help you write great text and develop yourself as a remote writer.

The Greater Akon region has more than 20 cities and you can either pick one that suits you the most or visit them from time to time since the most interesting ones are very close to Akron. Each city is proud of their entertainment options, amenities, etc. They’re all great for remote work as a writer.

Conclusion

Working hard is not the only thing that freelance writers should do. As a person who wants to develop new skills and get the tastiest contracts, you may consider finding yourself a perfect location/place/neighborhood where you’ll be able to work and prosper.

We’re sure that besides the most popular places that look attractive, there are cities that you should visit and try to live in. They’re smaller, they’re cheaper and they can help you nail more freelance jobs since most of these cities have great startups popping up here and there.

Don’t be too lazy to review all the reviews for each city, ask the friends who lived there and, of course, calculate the expenses. Then you’ll be ready to move or stay; it’s always up to you. But we’re sure that if you pick one of these cities, you will have everything you need to save money, buy yourself home and invest the rest of the money in some great business.

You should always remember that a smaller city is not necessarily bad, it’s usually more safe, cozy and sweet. Local communities are friendly and welcome new families in their area.
